    In an effort to mobilize a global consensus in support of greater transparency, the U.S. and Brazil launched the Open Government Partnership. It is a network of support for government leaders and citizens working to bring more transparency and accountability to governments. In total, 53 countries and dozens of civil society organizations are taking part and will convene next on April 17-18 at the initiative’s first High Level Summit.

Kenya is an original participant in the Open Government Partnership, a global initiative to fight corruption through digital transparency. We were the first sub-Saharan nation to have an open government data portal, and we are also digitizing judicial records, land deeds and the government procurement process, improving governance and accountability.

    Linked to this, the U.S. and UK worked with seven other countries to establish the Open Government Partnership (OGP) in 2011. The U.S. currently chairs the OGP with Brazil, and the UK will take over the U.S. co-chair in April 2012. This innovative partnership between governments and civil society commits governments to new levels of transparency and accountability to result in better responsiveness and services for their citizens. Over 50 countries have already signed up.

    Zegov.ca was launched Wednesday by University of Ottawa communications student Joelle Drouin as part of her master’s thesis on open government. With the help – and a bit of money – from four friends, she hopes the bilingual site will not only be a one-stop shop for finding government information through Web 2.0 sites, but also a way to encourage citizens to speak more to their governments.
