Jay Monteverde

Jay Monteverde is a deputy director at the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative China Program, where he provides technical legal expertise and manages program development, implementation, and evaluation. His portfolio includes environmental protection, information transparency, and trial advocacy skills. He was previously a Fulbright researcher focusing on Chinese environmental litigation at the Center for Legal Assistance to Pollution Victims. Prior to coming to China, he was an assistant attorney general in the Special Litigation Bureau of the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, and he has 10 years of public interest law experience in the U.S. on issues including environmental enforcement, employment law, immigrant rights, fraud against the government, and civil and criminal constitutional rights. Mr. Monteverde received his J.D. from Northwestern University Law School and his B.A. in East Asian Studies from the University of Chicago.
