Commitment Title

European citizenship

Problem

- Raise awareness among young non-French Parisians in particular, ahead of the European elections in June 2024.
- Provide information on citizens' rights and facilitate voter registration.
- Combat the spread of fake news.

Status quo

European elections are usually poorly attended throughout the Union, particularly among young people. Often considered too remote and disconnected from local issues, European elections have a hard time attracting citizens.

Action

In view of the European elections scheduled for 2024, Mr. Arnaud Ngatcha, Deputy Mayor of Paris in charge of Europe, International Relations and the Francophonie, has called for a working group on the European elections and European citizenship, set up within the Parisian Council of Europeans, a citizens' body of the City of Paris made up of 31 members of all EU nationalities. The purpose of this body is to advise Paris on its actions, particularly on European issues.

As part of this initiative, the Parisian Council of Europeans has launched a participative, citizen-based and innovative information campaign in the run-up to the European elections, to encourage Parisians, especially young people, to register to vote.

This information campaign will rely on the following actions:
- Organization of information events in engaging formats.
- Production of awareness-raising mini-videos in multiple European languages.
- Design of an awareness-raising flyer illustrated by a cartoonist.

Before and after the June 2024 elections, the Parisian Council of Europeans will pursue its activities, in liaison with the City of Paris, to promote European citizenship.

How will the commitment contribute to solving the public problem described above?

- Improved access to information: this participative campaign is designed to provide Parisians with more information on the forthcoming European elections, as well as on voter registration.

- Encouraging participation in the elections: this participative campaign will encourage Parisians, especially young people, to register on the electoral roll and vote in the European elections, to achieve better representation of citizens' priorities in the elections.
