Santo Domingo Inaugurates the First International Conference on Open Justice

Santo Domingo inaugura la primera Conferencia Internacional de Justicia Abierta

The first International Conference on Open Justice opened today in Santo Domingo, organized by the Judiciary of the Dominican Republic and the International Open Justice Network (RIJA), in partnership with the Open Government Partnership (OGP).

The event was attended by the President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, and the President of the Judiciary, Luis Henry Molina Peña, who highlighted the importance of moving toward more transparent, inclusive, and people-centered judicial systems. The participation of judges, representatives of civil society, academia, and international organizations sent a clear message: open justice is key to strengthening citizen trust and consolidating democracy in the region.

Over two days, representatives from 17 countries and 50 local governments will share experiences and best practices to:

  • Make visible the progress of judicial systems in open justice.
  • Exchange lessons learned that promote transparency, citizen participation, and accountability.
  • Address pending challenges to build a people-centered justice system.

Latin America and the Caribbean are consolidating their position as leading regions in open justice. According to the OGP Independent Review Mechanism, more than half of the countries are implementing commitments in this area, and nearly 40% already show early results, well above the global average.

The Santo Domingo conference marked a milestone in strengthening the open justice movement in the region and globally. The momentum generated will continue at the Open Government Summit 2025, to be held in October in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, where government and civil society leaders from around the world will gather to continue promoting ambitious reforms in transparency, participation, and accountability.
