Elected three times by the European Parliament, Emily O’Reilly served as European Ombudsman from 2013 until 2025.
As watchdog of the EU administration including the EU Commission and regulatory institutions and agencies such as the European Central Bank, the European Medicines Agency and the European Investment Bank, the European Ombudsman carries out investigations into allegations of poor administration, ethical breaches, human rights violations, and the refusal to release information.
Prior to that, Ms. O’Reilly served as Irish Ombudsman and Freedom of Information Commissioner for ten years following her early career as an investigative journalist and author.
She is an Irish citizen and currently lives in Dublin, Ireland.
