Joel Salas Suárez

Commissioner at the Federal Institute for Access to Public Information and Data Protection (IFAI) and Coordinator of the Open Government and Transparency Committee

Joel Salas Suárez was sworn in before the Senate as Commissioner of the autonomous Federal Institute for Access to Information and Data Protection (IFAI) on May 14, 2014 to a six-year period that expires in March 31, 2020. He is the Coordinator of the Open Government and Transparency Committee.

Before joining the IFAI, Salas Suárez served the Ministry of Public Administration as Head of the Office for Transparency and International Cooperation, where he coordinated with IFAI the elaboration of the Action Plan that Mexico presented to join the Open Government Partnership, and co-chaired the G20 Anti-Corruption Working Group.

His academic and professional focus has been on Open Government, anticorruption strategies and policies, and social movements and democratization.

Salas Suárez holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Trade from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente (ITESO Mexico) and a Master’s degree in Political Science from the Institute for Higher Studies of Latin America (IHEAL France). He is a Ph.D. candidate in Political Science at the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris 3.

Es licenciado en Comercio Internacional por el Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Occidente (ITESO), Maestro en Ciencia Política por el Instituto de Altos Estudios de América Latina de la Universidad de Paris III-Sorbonne Nouvelle y cuenta con estudios de doctorado en Ciencia Política en la Escuela de Altos Estudios en Ciencias Sociales, en París, Francia.

Se desempeñó como titular de la Unidad de Políticas de Transparencia y Cooperación Internacional de la Secretaría de la Función Pública, desde donde coordinó con el IFAI y la Sociedad Civil la redacción del Plan de Acción que México presentó en la Open Government Partnership (OGP). Además, durante el 2012, fue presidente del Grupo Anticorrupción del G20.

Actualmente es comisionado del INAI y coordina las comisiones de Políticas de Acceso a la Información y la de Gobierno Abierto y Transparencia.
