Pre-Summit OGP Thematic Events

Ahead of the 2021 OGP Global Summit hosted by the Republic of Korea and the U.S.-led Summit for Democracy, the OGP Support Unit and partners are hosting a series of thematic events around priority areas, including justice, anti-corruption, and gender and inclusion.

Global Dialogue of Justice Leaders

Hosted by: The Government of Latvia, in cooperation with OECD, OGP, and the Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies

The second edition of the Global Dialogue of Justice Leaders brought together ministers of justice and other justice leaders to shape the future of domestic and global cooperation for justice.

Building on the growing movement for people-centered justice, the Global Dialogue explored how justice systems can:

• Develop an integrated and interdisciplinary justice response to present and future global crises.
• Increase trust and accountability by promoting the adoption of open government principles across the justice system.
• Enable justice systems to contribute to a vibrant social contract and reinforce democratic values by putting people at centre of justice.

Driving Up Global Ambition on Beneficial Ownership Transparency at the Summit for Democracy and Beyond

Hosted by: OGP and the Government of the United Kingdom, in collaboration with Open Ownership, Transparency International, the B Team and other partners

The recent revelations of the Pandora Papers have once again shown the role played by secrecy in the global financial system. The use of shell companies and other legal vehicles to hide money and evade taxes undermines our democratic institutions and reduces resources for public services, like health and education.

There has been global progress on reforms to increase corporate transparency in recent years, including many countries who have established – or are establishing – a central register of company ownership. Several of these countries have also founded the Beneficial Ownership Leadership Group to share best practice, inspire ambition and to support each other on implementation. The event drew on the experience of the Leadership Group and explored ideas for cross-country action and collaboration.

Anti-corruption, including beneficial ownership transparency, is a priority of the upcoming Summit for Democracy and OGP Global Summit as a means to strengthen democracy. This public event was part of the build up to both Summits, and brought together high-level government representatives, civil society organizations, representatives from the private sector, and international partner organizations.

Hosted by: OGP and International Development Research Centre (IDRC)

This 90-minute session brought together OGP governments, civil society, and partners who are shaping the agenda on gender and open government. The first segment of the session included brief updates with the community on what we’ve learned and where we see entry points in the year ahead. Country reformers highlighted new commitments and approaches to increasing gender equality in open government commitments. After, participants broke out into working groups focused on key thematic entry points for OGP partners and governments over the coming year. Breakout conversations were not recorded.
