Open Algorithms Network

About

The Open Algorithms Network (OAN) is a global peer network for government officials seeking to make algorithms and AI used in public decision-making more transparent, accountable, and trustworthy. Coordinated by the Open Government Partnership, the network connects civil servants and global experts implementing algorithmic transparency and accountability reforms, creating spaces for practical peer learning, problem-solving, and community capacity building.

The network includes OGP countries leading on “open algorithms,” such as Canada, Chile, Colombia, Estonia, Finland, France, Nigeria, Scotland, the United Kingdom, and Uruguay. Many members are advancing reforms through commitments in their OGP action plans, while others join based on their work in this space and potential for future OGP commitments, ensuring diverse perspectives from across regions.

The network offers a two-tier engagement:

    • Public webinars that cover issues of AI accountability in the public sector, for anyone interested in the topic
    • Member-only peer-learning and support opportunities, for government practitioners designing and implementing policies

Peer Learning
for Members

Tailored conversations and connections

Members of the Open Algorithms Network are provided opportunities for small group or bilateral peer learning conversations to discuss what works and what doesn’t in the day-to-day implementation of AI accountability initiatives. This closed-door, peer-learning format ensures practitioners can share freely about their successes as well as the challenges encountered, network with peers beyond their respective agencies, and benefit from state-of-the-art conversations.

How it works

A community-driven agenda: Members have access to a shared digital platform to connect with other members, and are encouraged to ask questions and propose topics for peer discussion within the group beyond those proposed by the OGP coordinators.

A network for practitioners: Membership is open to working-level government representatives from any OGP country who works on policies surrounding the public sector’s use of algorithms and AI.

Lightweight commitment: Membership in the open algorithms network is free, unpaid, and comes with no formal obligation (only an open invitation) to participate in any peer learning session.

Public Webinars

Under the network title, OGP hosts quarterly webinars that bring together civil servants, civil society organizations, and expert partners to share knowledge and practical insights on implementing transparent and accountable algorithm policy within government. These sessions are open to the public, creating a space where anyone interested in algorithmic governance can learn from real-world reforms, implementation challenges, and how OGP members are using the platform to advance transparency of algorithms and AI.
